Work in Progress
Teatro delle Passioni, Modena. A show written and directed by Gianina Carbunariu, following an intensive documentation consisting of more than 100 interviews, with people in and around Modena, about their relation to work and the workplace. The themes revolved around work ethics, the value of work and the value of the worker, hopes, fears and dreams. The main concept, though, was precisely this - dreams. A sequence of fictional situations, in which characters based on real people come to terms with their emotions towards work. In this sense, I opted for a clean space, a blown-up piece of black marble, focusing on its power of suggesting hard, cold environments, as well as modern, stylish surfaces. Its cultural staples are multiple, which was a very helpful thing when going through 16 different moments in the show. I wanted to have a strong contrast with the space, so I chose to emphasize the dream state by using really strong colors for the costumes, as well as concrete, ready-to-wear pieces of working gear. A wonderful project to work on, an amazing team in a soon-to-be-demolished beautiful location.
